The Opportunity
It’s obvious that the mobile browser is going to be the next dominant communications and commercial engine. Less clear, however, is how the mobile browser will evolve.

This role puts you right in the middle of that evolution.

Companies like RIM must both anticipate and react if they are to be ready for the future. As Mobile Browser Manager, you’ll work at the apogee of RIM’s developmental curve, overseeing the technical teams that contribute the core pieces of how BlackBerry user experience the Internet:

  • Core Rendering
  • JavaScript Browser
  • UI Design Aesthetics
  • Browser-application interaction

This isn’t a gatekeeping assignment: your mandate is to build a collaborative, results-driven environment, fostering relationships with your internal teams as well as other product development and engineering stakeholders distributed across RIM’s corporate landscape.

Your vantage point will give you a seat at executive decision-making tables, acting as the voice of the browser team in discussions with global business units.

Internally, you’ll focus on your team’s success, working to improve quality in terms of both the development process and individual performance. In addition to meeting the job’s technical requirements, you’ll ensure that budgets, recruiting and other administrative nuts and bolts are kept tight and rust-free.

Ultimately, this central position offers you the chance to influence RIM’s future, its devices, and the way users interact with them.

If there’s irony to be found in this opportunity, it’s this: being ‘in the middle’ of this evolution actually brings you closer to leading it.

Duties:

  • Manage teams of technical staff ( up to 40 in total) that provide different aspects of the BlackBerry Browser
  • Establish a collaborative, business-driven team environment
  • Build relationships with other product development and quality engineering group managers to facilitate cross-organizational and multi-site software development projects
  • Proactively develop and execute plans to budget, recruit, staff, measure individual job performance and develop the talents of members of the managed team
  • Along with other engineering managers, engineers and program managers, develop strategies to improve software development processes and product quality
  • Prepare reports and make presentation on status of the managed team’s projects
  • Travel to other RIM global locations when required.

Who Should Apply

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field
  • 10 to 15 years of directly-related experience
  • 8 to 10 years of experience managing multi-disciplinary technical staff, including recruitment, coaching, and measuring individual job performance and talent development
  • Demonstrated strong engineering team leadership skills within a collaborative work environment.
  • Strong technical background in software engineering and (mobile browser) development
  • Strong skills in facilitating the needs of managed teams with upper management
  • Experience working with remote sites
  • Experience in department budgeting
  • Strong decision making, analytical, problem solving, conflict resolution and change management skills
  • Confidence to make decisions and influence all levels of management
