R&D Compensation Survey Results Released

By Trevor Stafford on April 16, 2008 - Comments (View)

Sorry for the somewhat abridged look of this page, a full, web-based recreation of the survey is on the way.

In the interim, here’s a link to the PDF.

This survey is the result of a lot of hard work, mostly by your friendly neighbourhood numerically-impaired editor. This is not the final version. It’s my hope that once this survey is out in the wild we’ll get a surge of responses, which will strengthen our data and allow us to re-publish and refresh the figures every month.

That’s right, every single response that went into this survey is from an outside source. If you haven’t already, please take the survey

Thank you to those who contributed their information to this body of work. I hope that it (and future, discipline-specific editions) can become a useful benchmark for our community.

By the way, survey design courtesy of freelance designer Tess McCabe.

Do you have data on contractor rates?

Yes. But there weren’t enough submissions to put the numbers forward.

What I may do is put together a single page for contractors and avoid the problem of having to drill down.

Hopefully we’ll see a surge in submissions from both contractors and full-time employees.

This is excellent information – any chance you will include data from the field of technical support or other careers in the professional services area?

Hi Jeff, yep, professional services is on the horizon, but it’s easily the most difficult survey to put together, it’s both broad (not in the 1950s Rat Pack slang sense) and deep.

Up next is product management, then sales, then professional services.

One question says “What do you expect to earn in 2007?” Shouldn’t it be 2008?

Yep. It should be! Thanks for reminding me. It should be up-to-date now.

It’s not completely clear from either the survey or results whether the amount earned refers to base salary or total earned (salary + bonus).

The numbers are base salary only. Most of the branches of the survey have a question that asks whether or not you get a bonus, and what your bonus is as a percentage of your income.
