About the Company
Analysts recommend them, investors buy them, and if you’re Canadian – you brag about them. With a history of developing breakthrough wireless email devices and connected enterprise solutions, our client is a world leader in mobile communications. As a global technology powerhouse, they continue to enjoy explosive growth.
The Opportunity
As a large part of a vital think tank, you’ll see your work and ideas influence not only an organization, but a generation of wireless devices.
Working in the System Architecture group, you’ll help develop and evolve the architecture of the BlackBerry group, including handhelds, core infrastructure elements, public services and gateways, and enterprise services interconnected using leased lines, Internet, and wireless carrier networks.
Specific focus areas include:
• security
• protocol specification, analysis, and conformance testing
• system-level performance analysis and optimization
• integrating new technology to extend BlackBerry beyond traditional data applications
• anticipating the potential impact of future wireless technologies
Responsibilities include supporting the software design teams, resolving technical issues, creating and reviewing architecture and design documents, performing feasibility studies, evaluating the impact of new features and technologies, and assisting in the definition of the system test strategy and the protocol implementation conformance statements.
Competitive salary + bonus/profit sharing + RSP matching
The organization is also generous with its yearly bonus, tying it in to company performance. Growth in software development is expected to top 30% this year and 2007 is expected to be a very successful year for RIM.
Finally, Research in Motion prefers to hire full-time employees. That means family-friendly packages, better job security and the chance to work with the same skilled people day in and day out.
Who Should Apply
You have a proven track record of designing, building and maintaining large-scale mission critical systems. Broad experience in systems development, design and architecture in the telecommunications and/or network infrastructure sectors is a definite asset. R&D expertise in the following areas is also a plus: Design and implementation of large-scale distributed systems, implementation and application of Internet protocols, and messaging and email systems.
This is a senior-level role, so ideally 3+ years of senior software architecture experience including systems requirement and functional specifications of systems or software, high level design and implementation of software systems, along with 10+ years of software development experience, is ideal.
A successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the interaction between a variety of technologies and system structures.

Q: I am a software architect, but still involved in systems work. Would I be a good fit?
A: The position isn’t focused on software architecture since that implies
Edit (for another )getting inside the individual components, and the other departments
responsible for those components would be doing that. Definitely this
position is focused on system architecture.
