Wanted: One Entrepreneurial Software Engineer

Published on October 31, 2007 - Comments

Tired of building other people’s ideas? Ready to trade routine for challenge and reward? A very early stage company is in search of a mastermind who can lead their software engineering effort.

This is an opportunity to build a product from scratch and guide it down the road to success. At stake is a founder’s equity share and influence in a company that has very good prospects for success. This is much more than a ‘job’—it could be the opportunity of a lifetime.

Great companies begin with great people and this one is off to a good start. The two founders are proven tech veterans. One is an enterprise sales exec with a history of closing multi-million dollar deals. The other is a Ph.D networking guru who specializes in large-scale, high-speed networks.

They know the technology, the players and the industry. Most importantly, they have identified a very real pain in the digital TV/IPTV market and they know how to address it.

In their quest to bring this Holy Grail to customers, they need a top software engineer to perfect the framework, infrastructure and development of their ground- breaking solution.

To take on this challenge, you’ll need a sound knowledge of networking, Internet and IP technologies and client-server design. The skill set calls for expertise with C++/C/Perl in a multi-tasking environment. The ‘nice-to-haves’ include a design background in set-top box software and/or MPEG decoding, VOD, DVR or encryption/authentication protocols.

I should also mention that tech skills are not enough. This role demands many crucial intangibles such as superior interpersonal and communication skills, ambition and drive, as well as the dedication and desire to compete and win in the marketplace.

You need to be a top performer who’s eager to turn expertise and passion into a killer product – and turn short term pain (the burden of ownership!) into lucrative long-term gain.

If this sounds right for you, or if you’re simply curious, drop me a line, or better yet, ask a question below…the two founders will be here to answer it.

As one of the co-founders I’m excited about bringing a third partner on board—there is a real ‘pain’ in the market and the timing is impeccable.

In terms of compensation for this role, I’m open to suggestion. It can be a combination of significant equity + salary or strictly salary, or whatever makes sense for the right candidate.

Well, there’s the obvious question: Why C++/C? A number of modern languages are designed to have properties that would seem relevant to your story: rapid development, strong networking capabilities, scalability, massive parallelism, etc. For example, Java offers some real benefits in the client/server design space. A passionate top-performer may be wary of a scenario which seems to have unexplained, a priori constraints on the tools that might be used to achieve a solution.

Hi there, I’m one of the co-founders.

You said:

It is true that aspects of Java are relevant to what we would like
to achieve here and indead java is considered for some aspects of our
solution. However, it is our experience that Java also has a number of major
drawbacks especially it is very “resource hungry”. One of our main
objectives is to have a lean and efficient solution that requires moderate
resource load. This is the motivation behind trying to reduce the use of
java as much as possible. However, it will be utilized in certain areas.

It sounds very interesting indeed, is the position still open?
And if so, what kind of financial plan do you have? I mean lots of good ideas die in first year or two, so do you have financing for at least 1 year? more?
For the description, you will need a guy who has a lot of experience in the field. Such a person, most likely already have (like me) good position in a well-established company, so to take the risk, I need at least to estimate it.
Another option can be to start working on this part time, till some kind of prototype is ready to attract potential
investors, so I don’t need to quit my job and can manage the risk. Do you consider such possibility?

Yes. The position is still open and we are beginning second interviews. Our primary objective is to find a highly talented individual and then determine the best salary/equity blend. Compensation could range from a full salary to straight equity. The founders have enough cash to get a prototype built and are in the discussions with an angel investor. Subject to finding an individual with the right life circumstances, hiring part-time is a viable option. Of course, this would come down to a matter of how much time he or she can dedicate.
