What keeps me awake at night?

Alex MacKay, CEO of DMTI Spatial Inc. talks about the excitement of heading a small company.

As the CEO of a small company, there’s rarely one thing that keeps me awake.

In fact, the best part of the job is that there are always many challenges that both keep you awake and more often find you awake at 4 am with no hope of returning to sleep. You just want to go!

Sometimes it’s because you have a key meeting or call to make so its just excitement to do the best possible.

Other times it’s more “worry” about not having enough funds, missing a window of opportunity, a problem with a key employee, or a delivery issue with an important client.

I think there are simply always challenges – that is the job – and accepting that can often make the sleepless anxiety periods much shorter.

One “worry” you see in a lot of small companies, that really is an obstacle, is money. If you don’t have the proper backing and you spend too much of your time scratching to make payroll then a ton of time and energy is wasted on basic “101” business, instead of storming the marketplace.

With finances in place I find for me there is still one constant item that seems to always be there and always seems critical. It’s what I would call “the pace of the company.”

There are so many opportunities in front of you and you see a future that’s brilliant and prosperous.

However, managing all the pieces and details to ensure the rest of the company sees the same and is building towards the same is a constant balancing act.

It’s easy to get too far ahead and lose the connection. So there is a need to balance between wanting to go so much faster but recognizing the detail that needs to be built and put in place for everyone to race ahead.

It’s what I am currently calling inside DMTI, “unleashing the mojo” which is really a rallying cry for unleashing personal passion.

Building an environment where people love coming to work is what a startup is all about!
